A real winter rally, the snowy Planai-Classic 2017
01/06/2017
The new season has begun with the Planai-Classic 2017, and how!
In recent years, the snow has often been collected in shreds on all the hills in order to do justice to the name "Winter Rally". In 2017, however, even the journey to the Enns Valley was a great test of patience, as there were always trucks blocking the roads.
The snow came late, long after Christmas and New Year, but now in huge quantities, at least in Styria and the surrounding area.
The rally started yesterday as a real, thoroughbred winter rally with the night stage to the Dachstein valley station. The snowfall did not let up towards the evening, as the weather forecast had predicted, no, it increased, at least at the foot of the Dachstein. Whether rear or front-wheel drive, they all had to fight.
Even my camera and the rest of my photo equipment suddenly froze in the prevailing -9 degrees. Suddenly there were no more setting options and shortly before the last car nothing worked at all. The camera and flash couldn't even be switched off, the ice was too thick around all the switches, not to mention the frozen gloves and the fingers stuck in them.
The doors of my BMW estate were frozen shut after just an hour, which of course pleased the really tough dogs in their pre-war cars, because they don't have doors.
It's supposed to get around 10 degrees colder as the snowfall subsides! We'll be surprised and hope that the old and new technology delivers what it has always promised.
