What drivers used to know - driving uphill before driving downhill
01/12/2017
It is probably still taught in driving schools and theory lessons today, but modern drivers are unlikely to understand it.
In times when roads were narrow (especially on slopes and mountain passes) and cars had little power and weak clutches, the rule was introduced that the car driving downhill had to reverse if it was not possible to cross.
Today, there are hardly any roads on which two vehicles cannot pass each other, and in the age of "Hill Control", DSG gearboxes and 200 hp or more under the hood, it hardly seems to be an obstacle anymore to start up a hill without any problems. And that's exactly what they wanted to prevent. In the past, the car that was going downhill had to stop. It was also easier to reverse because the reverse gear ratio was normally particularly short, making it easier to start uphill.
But that was in the past, because when do you get into this situation nowadays? And you can only guess what the autonomously driving Tesla would do in this situation ...
