Winged cars instead of winged words
I recently read somewhere in the Porsche literature that the 911 Carrera RS was the first production car with a rear spoiler. Well, the author must have forgotten to look to America, because there were already vehicles at the end of the sixties that had a wing that certainly couldn't be overlooked. That was the time of the Dodge Hemi Daytona (pictured above) and Plymouth Superbird, of which over 2000 were built.
Mecum will be auctioning off nearly a dozen of these rare American classics (as part of a 10-day auction of 3000 cars!) at the traditional Kissimmee auction tomorrow, and some of them are really valuable.
The green Dodge Hemi Daytona from 1969, for example , was estimated at USD 900,000 to 1,100,000; after all, only 70 of these cars were produced in 1969. It is also one of two in the eye-catching livery.
A "more ordinary" 1970 Plymouth Superbird without a Hemi engine in white is a more affordable entry into the wing club; it is listed with an estimate of USD 135,000 to 160,000, but hardly looks any less spectacular.
The Hemi version was also available from Plymouth and is also expensive, namely USD 600,000 to 750,000 in the case of the orange Superbird model from 1970 with a 426/425 HP engine.
