What Squire, McLaren and Cizeta have in common
How do you make a small fortune? You start with a big one and build your own sports car.
There is probably a lot of truth in this saying, but it never stopped ambitious men (there were probably no women in this group) from striving for the ultimate sports car.
Adrian Squire tried it in the thirties, Ron Dennis and Gordon Murray in the nineties. The results were called the Squire 1 1/2 Litreand the McLaren F1( pictured above) and they were breathtaking sports cars that were ahead of their time in many respects. However, they were also expensive and hardly ever sold.
The Bugatti EB110, the Jaguar XJ-220 and the Cizeta V16T were similar, to name just a few examples from more recent times.
Many also tried in the decades before, and almost as many failed.
What remained were impressive sports cars, most of which survived in small numbers, which today make enthusiasts dream.
