It came late, but it came anyway. The DB7 marked a successful new beginning for Aston Martin in a more affordable sports car segment and paved the way for the future. In the early nineties, Aston Martin only produced a low three-digit number of cars. This was despite the new opportunities and financial resources following the takeover by Ford in September 1988 as well as the revised V8 series and the newly introduced Virage (1989). In order to increase volume, a new entry-level model was needed. And although such a model was expected, the presentation of the DB7 at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1993 was nevertheless a surprise. Rumors had already been circulating about a cheaper new sports car that could be produced in large numbers. The project was called DB1999, but never made it out of the concept stage.
