Would you have bought the Beetle almost 80 years ago?
In 1939, the Volkswagen type "KDF" was offered for 990 Reichsmark. An Opel Kadett at that time cost 2100 Reichsmark, so the "Beetle" was a bargain in comparison.
And with 23.5 hp, it reached 100 km/h (according to the sales brochure) and consumed only 6.5 liters per 100 km. It could carry five people and some luggage (behind the rear seats).
In any case, the Kadett was a force to be reckoned with on the Reichsautobahn, because despite its displacement advantage, the Kadett only had 23 hp and offered considerably more resistance to the airstream.
But the Beetle had this unorthodox air-cooled rear engine, so it bid farewell to the almost omnipresent standard design (engine at the front, drive at the rear). And it also looked completely different from all the other cars.
However, after a costly savings phase, only a few people could afford a Beetle anyway; for the rest, there was the sales brochure to dream about. And we now have it in our archive, freshly restored and filed away. A very special journey into the past ...
