Surprising new youngtimers - from the A-Class to the Zafira
Of course you remember the first part of the "Men in Black" film trilogy with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, right? That was almost yesterday. We feel the same way about some cars that are now maturing into youngtimers, i.e. have passed their 20th birthday. And there are some surprising models among them.
In fact, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (pictured above) is entering its twentieth year. The early small saloons in sandwich construction have become veritable youngtimers. You could probably drive them to the Crème 21 or to other events.
The Citroën Xsara or the Renault Kangoo would also be suitable for rally participation in terms of age limit.
The Opel Zafira and the Smart ForTwo were announced in 1997 or even earlier.
The VW Sharan had already been around for two years and the Ford Ka was no longer brand new either.
New in 1997 were the Golf (IV) and the Astra (G), real production hits. And can still be seen on the roads every day.
Even the Ford Ka was no longer completely new in 1997.
A minor sensation in 1997 were the first hybrid cars from the Toyota brand that could be bought in large quantities. The Prius may have looked a little different, but it was bought.
Those who wanted something less ecological could also buy a Mercedes-Benz M-Class, one of the forerunners of the SUV boom.
In the 1990s, car manufacturers set out to occupy every niche, no matter how small, to expand their model ranges and to build high-quality and durable cars. This is why these vehicles are still seen more as used cars and less as collectors' cars. Nobody is looking at them yet and it will probably be a few years before this happens. Perhaps they will already be classic cars by then ...
