Which one would you have bought? (Retromobile)
As is well known, the Rétromobile week always includes major auctions that are talked about for a long time before and after. This has been the case again over the last few days and for fans of the Citroën DS Cabriolet , a visit to the auctions was a must anyway.
On Thursday, Bonhams auctioned off a 1964 Citroën DS 19 Cabriolet for EUR 180,000 (hammer price).
On Friday, the French auction house Artcurial had three of these open-top goddesses on offer.
The first to go under the hammer was a blue model from 1965, which had never been fully restored and was still in very good condition. The highest bid was EUR 135,000, which was enough to buy it.
Around three quarters of an hour later, a barn find of a DS 19 Cabriolet of the same year was knocked down for EUR 85,000 (estimate EUR 40,000 to 60,000). This was also presented as very authentic, but was in visibly poor condition and was described as a restoration object.
Normally, one would assume that a restoration base would have to be bought for as much less than the work would cost afterwards, but one can assume that this car cannot be completely renewed for EUR 50,000.
Whether the buyer knew more or had other plans.
In any case, a few hours later he would have had the opportunity to buy another DS19 Cabriolet, this time from 1962, again for EUR 135,000 (plus surcharge/commission) and also with a complete history.
The question is, which one would you have bought?
