Sedan or sports coupé? The answer is not the same in all cases
If you look at valuations or auction results, there is a clear preference among classic car and youngtimer enthusiasts for coupés and sports variants of a model series or model family. The Karmann-Ghia is preferred to the Beetle, the Manta to the Ascona, the Peugeot 504 Coupé to the saloon of the same name, the Fiat 124 Coupé to the four-door version with the same three numbers. And why? Because people often find the coupés prettier and because they are sportier? Or because they are rarer? Probably. The two-door and tighter coupé versions are usually less practical and logically offer less space and utility value. But this counts for little when it comes to points on the desirability scale.
And are there exceptions? A matter of taste.
We recently had the opportunity to drive an Alfa Romeo 1600 GT Junior and an Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Super one after the other and we were almost more enthusiastic about the saloon than the coupé! Despite its upright and high seating position, the Giulia offers everything you would expect from an Alfa Romeo with "cuore sportivo" and also has the bonus of four full-size seats and a spacious trunk.
And the classic Giulia rear end is unrivaled anyway. Of course, the "Bertone" Junior is also fun, no doubt about it. But every now and then you might want to take two friends with you and that is simply better in a four-door car without having to sacrifice anything. But tastes differ and so do personal preferences ...
