Today at 9:01 a.m. Formula 1 died
03/03/2016
Kimi Raikkonen heralded the future and another death blow to F1 this morning. Since the beginning of motorsport, the monoposti have raced openly. In the past, far more open than today.
But in this day and age, every accident is followed by an immediate more or less sensible reaction. After Jules Bianchi's fatal accident at the 2014 Japanese GP, voices were raised that it was no longer appropriate to drive open-top. Like the Golf convertible with the "Wisa-Gloria bar", F1 now wants to protect the driver's head with a terrible frame. It is definitely certain that even this bar could never have prevented Bianchi's fatal injuries, because a head-on crash at 160 km/h into a crane truck weighing several tons could not have been stopped by such a "halo".
A collision with flying parts, such as the screw that hit Felipe Massa at the 2009 Hungarian GP, could perhaps have been prevented, but that was a one-off accident that was probably like hitting the lottery six with an extra number.
Why must everything that has been good for years suddenly be changed and made less attractive? Kimi's hand gesture could be interpreted as "What the f..."!
Like so many things, however, this bar also has its advantages, even if it only helps to push the vehicle.
