Sporty and elegant or elegant and sporty? - Audi 100 two-door and Coupé S in the (historic) test
Summary
At the beginning of the 1970s, Audi offered two different two-door versions of its top model. With a notchback and long wheelbase, the Audi 100 two-door was for those who wanted to combine the advantages of a saloon with a little more elegance. The coupé with a shortened chassis and hatchback, on the other hand, was more for the sports driver who often needed four seats. This historical test from 1970 clarifies the details.

Our test of the two-door saloon also serves to check the workmanship, maturity and further development since the Audi 100 : Mercedes 200/220 comparison test last summer. The temporarily poor workmanship after the start of full production in the spring of 1969 had already been overcome by the summer; in the meantime, intensive refinement work continues to make itself felt, particularly in the interior noise damping. Due to a working error during testing, Audi had only recognized the cause of a vibration transmission between the engine and body after the start of series production. In addition, the running smoothness of some of the engines was disappointing, and there was also the inevitable gathering of experience with the new model. However, the noise damping now achieved is already exemplary; the slightly higher noise level in the medium speed range, which we criticized, is only noticeable because the noise damping in the lower and upper speed range is so particularly good. Further progress concerns the refinement of functional details; it is particularly pleasing that the engine no longer jams under load changes (accelerating/decelerating) as it used to.
