Would that still be conceivable today?

Imagine this scene: A major German brand manufacturer is showing its new products at the Geneva Motor Showand a small company has a stand directly opposite and is exhibiting a replica of one of its neighbor's earlier cars.
This is what happened in 1976, when Franco Sbarro placed his Tipo America, a reinterpretation of the BMW 328, directly opposite the new BMW cars. And nobody seemed to mind. BMW was happy to be able to supply six-cylinder engines, Sbarro was pleased with the good visitor flow.
Nowadays, a scandal would be the least that could arise from a situation like this; the manufacturer would probably be legally reprimanded immediately and the replica vehicles would be crushed and destroyed.
But things used to be different and perhaps even better ...
