Volkswagen did it with the Golf, Fiat with the Ritmo. To appeal to the more conservative buyers, a trunk was added to the hatchback compact cars.
However, this was not necessarily breaking new ground, as Philippe Charbonneaux did the same with the innovative Renault 16 hatchback . The result was called the "Berline" or "Tricorps" and it was on display at the Rétromobile Paris a week ago .
We have now found a picture from the presentation in March 1966 in the archives, which we did not want to withhold from our readers.
And, even earlier, there were obviously attempts to give the Mini a notchback. However, this additional trunk came from the accessories trade and cost just £ 28.10, made of plastic and plywood.
The company responsible was called LMB Components, and we don't know whether they made a fortune with it.
