It didn't quite turn out that way after all

In December 1984, the new E-Class, also known as the W 124 model series, was presented by Mercedes-Benz and the Stuttgart-based company was already holding out the prospect of an estate and a coupé at this time. Meanwhile, the future coupé was already making its rounds in Lapland, although the presentation did not take place until March 1987 at the Geneva Motor Show.
While the exterior hardly changed apart from the typical camouflage, two years later the interior, and in particular the dashboard, was much more conventional than the prototype photographed by the magazine "Bunte" suggested (or feared). The prototype had a fully electronic dashboard with a digital speedometer and other liquid crystal displays.
The rest, however, looked largely conventional. However, the turnaround in Mercedes dashboard design expected by Automobil Revue at the time never materialized ... and many a classic car fan will be glad of this today.
