Where did the engine go?

Anyone who opens a hood at the Geneva Motor Show is often surprised and perhaps disappointed to discover that there is hardly anything to see.
Forty or fifty years ago, things were very different. Back then, you could understand the entire technology just by looking under the hood. It was easy to analyze how many cylinders, how many camshafts or how many carburetors an engine had. And from this, it was then possible to get a rough idea of performance and characteristics.
Today, this is hardly possible any more, because most of the technology is hidden under plastic covers; there were even manufacturers who screwed the hood shut so that the vehicle owner would not think of doing anything to the technology.
Maserati (picture above) does not go that far with the current model range, but there is still not much to see, unlike the Jaguar XK 140 (second picture).
