Premiere in Geneva?
03/04/2015
Geneva is about to open its doors for the 85th time. Various new models are about to be unveiled.
Not so long ago, the then new cars were shown for the first time on the company's own stand at one of the motor shows without any great fanfare. That was also the presentation. Jaguar, for example, drove the E-Type on the road to Geneva shortly after its completion, where it was presented to the world press for the first time a few hours later.
Today, journalists from all over the world are flown to Prague, as in this case with the Skoda Superb, where the new Superb was unveiled in detail in a night of great expense and great staging with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and black soul voices.
Skoda chief designer Jozef Kaban explained all his fantasies, ideas and realizations behind the new model to the world press.
The car is admired for hours like a world-famous, newly discovered work of art, with plenty to eat and drink.
In the past, there were real innovations, such as the aforementioned Jaguar E-Type, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL or the Porsche 911, but today it's just a matter of attention to detail. Light design sometimes like this, sometimes like this. Edges that used to support the lines now lead their own existence and with their existence create a completely different line than would be expected from the basic shape.
Thank goodness Skoda briefly pointed out the tradition of the name, because the "Superb" is not a newly created name by a marketing department, but originated as early as 1934 with the 640 "Superb" model. Anyone who wanted to see the model in the flesh had the opportunity to do so at the Rétromobile 2014 in Paris.
We are now looking forward to Geneva's new products and hope for more tradition than in the past two years. After all, brands today live mainly from their decades of tradition and they should stand by that. Only in this way can the "Borgward" brand regain a foothold after 50 years or "Jensen" be resurrected.
