Courage to change your face
02/21/2015
Nowadays, when cars from the same manufacturer sometimes look as much alike as sneakers of different sizes, it is hard to imagine the courage of BMW in the mid-sixties .
Within two years, the Bavarian car manufacturer presented cars with very different faces.
The BMW 2000, which was presented in January 1966 (picture above), featured rectangular headlights.
The BMW 2000 CS Coupé, which had been presented to the public a few months earlier, featured twin round headlights in a wide housing.
And the BMW 1800 from 1964 was still adorned with the classic BMW sixties face with one round headlight each, as introduced by the new class and later the 1600.
I can remember that I was particularly impressed by the BMW 2000 face as a child and that I drew pages and pages of this new BMW face. However, it didn't catch on, because the following generations mostly had double round headlights (without a summarizing housing around them). This only changed again decades later.
