One-offs at the Techno Classica
04/11/2013
Of course, there are many Of course, there are many unique pieces to be seen at this year'sTechno Classica and, in fact, almost every car built before 1960 (or even later?) is individual and unique because of all the manual work involved. Nevertheless, two vehicles in particular caught our eye in Essen, along with others, because you don't see them often and they have remained unique for various reasons.
Firstly, there is the Porsche Turbo Cabriolet with all-wheel drive from 1981 (picture above). It was presented at the 1981 IAA to test the public's interest. They were enthusiastic, especially about the innovative roof and the fact that, for the first time since the 356 Cabriolet, there was to be a fully open Porsche again. And so the Porsche 911 SC Cabriolet appeared the following year, without all-wheel drive and without forced ventilation of the engine, but wonderfully open.
On the VW stand at the Techno Classica was another one-off, the Passat GTI. In the late seventies, Wolfsburg had the idea of extending the GTI's success to other model series. This resulted in the Passat GTI, which never made it into series production, despite its sporty appearance and GTI emblem on the front.
Incidentally, Techno Classica is still running until Sunday, April 14, 2013 and our, as always, extensively illustrated visit report will not be long in coming.
