The measured woman

In the mid-seventies, the use of computer and robot technology was still worthy of extensive press coverage. For example, there were reports about the research and development department of the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, where a 50-ton, 12x6x9 meter scanning device was in use. Objects, from a plasticine model of a car to a living lady, could be scanned with gentle pressure but "completely dispassionately" and converted into a perfect design drawing with computer assistance.
According to the press release at the time, the creative joy remained with the human designer, while the hard work of preparation was taken over by the machine. Thanks to the tireless drawing assistant, it was possible to complete the perfect elaboration of a model generation in a precious short time, the benefits of the new technology were explained.
Almost 40 years later, we are particularly pleased with the beautiful photo (in the Zwischengas archive)with the Golf I in the background and also with the title of the press release at the time: Gentle giant.
