In the spring of 1978, Fiat launched the Ritmo as the spearhead of a comprehensive renewal of the car range, which had to hold its own in an already well-stocked competitive environment with the VW Golf, Opel Kadett, Simca Horizon and Renault 14. An individual appearance and a well thought-out design were to make this possible. Did they succeed? Development work on the Ritmo, known internally as the "X 1/38", began as early as 1973. The specifications called for a maximum four-metre-long, quiet car with variable (and large) interior space, low air resistance, low fuel consumption, easy maintenance and the greatest possible active and passive safety. The oil crisis influenced development just as much as the arrival of new competitors such as the VW Golf.
