Forgotten beauties - the Opel Diplomat Frua Coupé
03/14/2011
Opel presented the Opel CD, designed by Charles M. Jordan, at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show . The car looked stunning, but was not really selling to customers in its present form and extremity.
Due to the very positive response, Pietro Frua was commissioned to develop a practical version of the CD, the result, a stunning silver coupe, can be seen in the pictures here. The car was powered by an Opel Diplomat V8 engine and transmitted the power to the rear axle via a three-speed automatic gearbox. At the time, the sports car was expected to reach a top speed of 220 km/h. At 1600 kg and 4.5 m long, the concept car was also sufficiently compact .
Despite the successful design, however, this car remained a one-off, as General Motors was unable to commit to series production.
The later Bitter CD probably adopted design ideas and platform architecture approaches, but must be seen as an independent vehicle. Many photos and more details about this interesting vehicle can be found on the Pietro Frua website.
