Coys auction in Essen - bargains and expensive rarities?
03/31/2011
64 vehicles await bidders with a looser wallet atthe Coys auction at Techno Classica Essen on Saturday (April 2, 2011).
There is something for everyone, starting with a 1972 Triumph TR 6 that wants to find a new owner for between 8,000 and 12,000 euros, through to sought-after rarities such as the Bentley 4.5-liter Le Mans Tourer from 1930, whose estimated price is entrusted to only a few. However, this portfolio will not achieve new record prices, as we have seen in the past, because showpieces such as the Ferrari 250 GTO or Bugatti Royale and the like are simply missing.
However, the list certainly invites you to ponder, as there are many interesting vehicles up for auction.
The Jaguar SS 100 is one of the most popular and enjoyable pre-war sports cars. The vehicle on offer is one of the 198 2.5-liter models (18083) from 1937, which has made its way across the Atlantic and back again, was restored once in the 1980s and recently underwent a thorough overhaul. With an estimated price of 200,000 to 250,000 euros, it is certainly not at the upper end of the prices achieved to date.
The Bentley 4.5-liter from 1930, in the form of a Le Mans Tourer, bears the chassis number FS3616. It took part in the Mille Miglia in the 1980s and also led a busy life in other respects; its history is well documented. The estimated price is not disclosed.
One of the most popular classics is the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, which comes under the hammer here in black with chassis number 1210427502672 and built in 1958 for an estimated price of 50,000 to 60,000 euros. The car was restored in the States in 2000 and is currently described as being in good to excellent condition. However, the advertised price does not suggest otherwise.
We enter completely different territory with the Rejo Mk III from 1960. In the tradition of the Lotus XI and Lola Mk1, an uncompromising sports car was created here, which was built in a handful at most and with the approximately 100 hp Ford engine should cut a fine figure on the racetrack (FIA pass available). With an estimated price of 40,000 to 60,000 euros, you are certainly not wrong, at least at the lower end.
Of course, the obligatory gullwing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL should not be missing here either. Coys has an example in red, of which there are quite a few. Chassis 00279 was built in 1956 and originally exported to the United States. The car has been well looked after and belonged to motorcycle and Formula 1 world champion Sir John Surtees. The car comes original with luggage set and Becker car radio and is expected to fetch Euro 400'000 to 450'000 . We may remember that a few months ago a 300 SL reached USD 1 million in America.
No, this is not a Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan, but an alternative to it, based on the ISO Rivolta . With 550 hp and a lightweight aluminum body, it should be able to do a lot on the racetrack, but the car was only built in 1970 based on a '67 Rivolta and it's not clear to me if you could get an FIA pass for this car. No estimated price was given, but in any case you are buying a rarity and probably a one-off with all its advantages and disadvantages.
The Aston Martin DB4 Series III is more sophisticated. DB4/674/R was built in 1961 and has remained largely unrestored; the engine was overhauled in 1998. In recent auctions, good DB4s have fetched over 200,000 euros each, and this one should be no different. But you are securing a piece of English cultural heritage and a truly captivating shape that has only been partially achieved in subsequent vehicles.
