The ride in the Porsche 917
03/08/2011
The Porsche 917 was a groundbreaking racing car, presented at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show.
Powered by an air-cooled twelve-cylinder mid-engine, the car won Le Mans in 1970. Later derivatives with turbochargers achieved up to 1100 hp and more. The 917 was also the main character in Steve McQueen's film "Le Mans".
Its original "undriveability" is legendary; at the beginning, all the works drivers waved it off, nobody wanted to sit in the cockpit. Only later, when the car had been taught "manners", did Mr. Siffert, Mr. Herrmann and Mr. Rodriguez get into the car and win on many race tracks around the world.
But how does the Porsche 917 drive? Here's a nice video we found on YouTube, it's a bit long, but the background noise in particular is highly impressive, so turn it up all the way!
