A saloon with an in-line six-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive was not the norm in the 1930s. Nevertheless, the Audi Front chose precisely this design and created an elegant and powerful vehicle. Commercial success was modest with around 2,800 vehicles sold, but today the survivors are sought after and cherished. In light of current events, this report goes in search of traces and portrays an Audi Front from 1936 in detail in words and pictures.
With the help of Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union created the F 103, the first Audi of the post-war era, a successful vehicle that paved the way into the future for the four rings. The fact that the brand already belonged to Volkswagen and that the car could just as easily have rolled off the production line as an entry-level model at Mercedes is one of the best stories in 130 years of the automobile. The Wankel engine dagger legend
NSU is regarded as a Wankel pioneer; in the late 1960s, the NSU Ro 80 was as far ahead of the competition as the Citroën DS 19 in the 1950s. But there were problems and the Wankel engine died with the Ro 80 in Germany. Or so they thought. But that's not quite true. The engine was almost resurrected in luxury-class Audi vehicles. The (long) story, shrouded in conspiracy theories and legends, reads almost like a thriller and shows why the board of management made the right decision back then when they abandoned the rotary piston engine. This report summarizes over 20 years of Wankel development and shows it in many pictures that have hardly ever been seen before.
On September 9, 1965, the new majority shareholders of Auto Union invited Volkswagen to Lake Starnberg. The F103, the quasi-successor to the very slow-selling DKW F102, was presented here. The surprise? The new one was not called DKW but: Audi! And it was also available as a station wagon ...
In 1969, Audi presented the 100 CS Coupé, which was characterized on the one hand by many identical parts to the saloon, but on the other hand by some refinements to the engine, chassis and equipment. The hobby testers were delighted and would have loved to take part in the Monte Carlo Rally with the car. With a sprint time of less than 10 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, the Audi 100 CS Coupé was a fast car in 1969, so the Hobby editors did not predict a "Capri run" due to the comparatively high price.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Audi offered two different two-door versions of its top model. With a notchback and long wheelbase, the Audi 100 two-door was for those who wanted to combine the advantages of a saloon with a little more elegance. The coupé with a shortened chassis and hatchback, on the other hand, was more for the sports driver who often needed four seats. This historical test from 1970 clarifies the details.
At Audi in 1970, they took the term "coupé" literally and cut eleven and a half centimetres from the floor assembly of the 100 to transform the two-door notchback saloon into a sporty hatchback. The result was a touring car that was as fast as it was safe to drive. Only the space on offer was of course somewhat more limited, as this historical test report shows.
At the beginning of the seventies, mid-range coupés experienced their heyday. Reason enough for Karmann to put numerous studies on wheels. The Italian top designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and his company ItalDesign were always involved. Three of the models that never made it into series production as VW, Audi and BMW are presented here and shown in many current and historical pictures.
With the Audi 100 Coupé S, the Ingolstadt-based company presented a ravishingly beautiful coupé in 1969. It took some time before the test editors were able to lay their hands on the Audi sports car; the Austrian Auto Revue published its first test in 1971. Herbert Völker was very impressed by the appearance and safety, but also highlighted weaknesses and points for improvement in his report. Audi 100 C1 - here to stay!
Perhaps it was because Volkswagen was not yet particularly used to integrating a different corporate culture into its own, or it was simply the distance between Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt, which meant that the subsidiary Auto Union, which was taken over in 1964, was happy to cook its own soup from the outset. This may look a little like a loss of control, but it gave the development department of the brand with the four rings the freedom that saved the Volkswagen Group as a whole. The Audi 100 C1 is the best example of this, as it was developed without the knowledge of the Board of Management and was a blessing for the entire Group.
A bourgeois today, one might exclaim in view of the Volkswagen K70 and Audi 80 LS. But the two notchback saloons stand for much more than conservative mid-range fare. They heralded a new beginning for the Volkswagen Group at the start of the 1970s. But two competing car designs could not be a good idea for a group that was not bedded on roses. Only one could survive. This article compares the two mid-range saloons and shows them in many pictures.
The Audi 80 (Type 80), built from 1972 to 1976, was a sales success. And it was the father of a whole generation of bestsellers such as the VW Passat, the VW Golf and the VW Scirocco. With its characteristics - economy, modern technology, good space and superior driving dynamics - it hit the bull's eye in the years following the oil crisis. This was also the view of Auto Revue magazine, which was able to test an Audi 80 LS at the end of 1972. The Audi 80 GT rounded off the attractive 80 series with a sporty edition. In 1973, it was considered the best sports instrument in the 1.6-liter class. The safety paint finish and matt black accents provided a sporty touch. However, the base price of DM 10,750 was a proud feature. In the winter of 1974/1975, the magazine 'hobby' compared eight compact cars from five countries in a meticulous test that required driving on the Nordschleife and the participation of eight test drivers: the Audi 50 competed against the Citroën Ami Super, Datsun Cherry, Fiat 127, Innocenti Mini, Peugeot 104, Renault 5 and Simca 1000 GLE and won hands down. The Datsun Cherry came second, but this was not the only surprise in the extensive comparison test.
