When Audi presented the V8 as an independent model at the end of 1988, the car world was upside down. Some were enthusiastic about the car's innovations; others feared for their longstanding leading role in the luxury saloon market. After all, you couldn't buy one with such dynamics and, above all, all-wheel drive from either Mercedes-Benz or BMW. Critics therefore searched desperately for the upstart's weak points and quickly found them. Above all, the amount of space in the rear seemed too little for a luxury sedan. The reason for this was obvious, as the Audi V8 was based on the Audi 100 of the 44 model series - and the space in the second row was designed for pre-school children and not for CEOs.
