Passion for Audi Sport quattro
Sure, some car lovers collect and document everything there is to know about their car. But there are also true enthusiasts who take it a step or two further. One of them is Stephan Becsei. He owns one of the 212 Audi Sport quattros ever built; he bought it new back then. He was just 28 years old at the time. From then on, he used the rally car in disguise as his everyday vehicle, summer and winter alike. And over the years, he became a true expert on the subject.
Unlike other enthusiasts, however, Becsei has gone one or two steps further. He decided to document the complete history of the Sport quattro in book form. This was in 2016. Audi Tradition and ACI Switzerland were also originally on board. But the two partners pulled out in 2018. Becsei, however, stayed the course and authored a two-volume work on the Audi Sport quattro totaling just over 310 pages, which he is now having printed at his own expense in a run of 100 copies and distributing himself.
The two books combine two stories into one. First: the production model, which would never have existed without Audi’s commitment to rally racing. Second: the rally model, which would not have existed in that form without the ambitious production model.
Becsei spent 10 years researching, speaking with those involved, and documenting the technical development. He also writes about the problems he had with his own Sport quattro and how Audi handled them. He really leaves nothing out. It’s a fascinating read, even if you don’t have a Sport quattro in your garage.
About 70 to 80 double-sided tapes have already been sold or reserved, so there aren’t many left. We’re happy to put interested parties in touch with the author.
