Collecting is just part of life (Question of the month)
If you enjoy your classic car, you'll also get excited about the items related to it. That's how you might end up with the right sales brochure, repair manual, scale model, or enamel plaque. For some classic car owners, there's no passing up the chance when such items turn up at a parts market or auction.
Original accessories or period-correct items might also complement your classic car nicely. This can even extend to a bedspread featuring your favorite car or clothing with an embroidered brand logo. What's essential for one person is just superfluous trinkets for another—distractions from what really matters: the car itself.
But we wanted to know more, so we ran a “Question of the month” among Zwischengas readers to find out just how far they'd go. The question was: “Is the car enough for me, or do I need everything that goes with it?”
In fact, only 8% of the roughly 200 readers who responded said that the car itself was enough for them and that they didn't need anything else.
However, 10% collect everything related to cars, while another 38% collect at least the useful items such as test reports, buying guides, repair manuals, brochures, and the like. They do, however, skip the “merchandise.”
4.5% also buy a scale model of their classic car, and 3.5% equip their old car with period-appropriate accessories.
And 36% take a pragmatic approach, wanting at least a model, a sales brochure, and two or three other items—without going overboard.
