Economy at Volkswagen
It was in the early 1980s when Volkswagen launched a VW pickup in the USA. It was called the "Sportruck", at least that's what it said on the sides. This was either an artificial term or they had simply omitted two letters, namely "ts", as it was probably a sports truck.
However, the economy did not end with the lettering, as the Golf/Rabbit-based small truck was actually equipped with a 1.7-liter diesel engine, according to the press release. And thanks not least to the 3+E transmission, it could achieve 42 MPG in the city or 49 MPG on the highway, i.e. consumption of around 4.8 liters of diesel per 100 km.
The "Sportruck" was a special version with additional lettering, black bumpers and a black radiator grille, which also featured halogen headlights and internally adjustable rear-view mirrors as standard. The buyer could therefore also save a little on the extras ...
