Does a car have to be beautiful?
02/20/2025
It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But when you look at today's cars on the road, and even more so at the concept cars at motor shows, it is hard to believe that anyone considers these vehicles to be beautiful.
I was struck once again by the example of the Fiat Fastback, which is apparently soon to be marketed in Europe (in a similar form to the concept car).
These huge wheels with the geometric elements, the comparatively small window areas, this angular geometry, this "Hummer-esque" appearance ... no, this vehicle is obviously not supposed to be beautiful, nor does it have to be.
When we think back to the motor shows at which the Fiat Ginevra or the Fiat 2300 Coupé Speciale Lausanne were presented, for example, we ask ourselves why designers today no longer strive for elegance and genuine beauty.
Perhaps it is because external design houses are no longer consulted? Or that light signatures have become more important than pure design? It's no wonder that many people still like to look at the shapes of old cars ...
