Faster than fast (car connoisseur quiz)
02/09/2025
Speed exerts a tremendous fascination. Since the invention of the automobile, people have been trying to be as fast as possible and always a little faster than the others - in the best case, faster than the whole world. Although safety, economy and reliability are by far the more important criteria in everyday life, no value has such appeal as a new speed record.
For this reason, every year since 1949, full-throttle fetishists have gathered in the salt flats of Utah for "Bonneville Speed Week" to indulge in the thrill of speed and perhaps set a new record. The chances of this happening are not bad at all, as the number of different classes has now reached such an extent that there is a suitable niche for almost every car.
Even a small truck with a diesel engine can be the fastest of its kind. On the cover photo from 1971, Bill Snyder is about to set a new record of 186.778 km/h for diesel vehicles with a displacement of up to two liters (FIA Class E) with a Ford Ranchero.
We have now compiled ten of these cars, which were once record holders or wanted to become record holders, into a new car connoisseur quiz. Would you like to give it a try?
