Does the sound make the music?
07/22/2024
The other day I was sitting in the garden of a little house in the suburbs. Cars drove past and they all made strange sounds. I guessed they were electric cars, which nowadays have to make themselves heard up to a certain speed.
The sounds differ from each other, but they hardly allow any conclusions to be drawn about the vehicle unless you know it well.
This used to be different. When you heard an engine, you could tell whether it was a four-, six-, eight- or twelve-cylinder. The trained ear could even tell the difference between a six-cylinder and a V6, and you could recognize a boxer engine by its sound anyway.
Of course, this did not necessarily allow a clear conclusion to be drawn about the car model, but the sound was often so characteristic that you could easily identify a particular car by its exhaust sound.
Since the beginning, we have been collecting the "pronunciation" of the cars we portray on Zwischengas. In the meantime, almost 450 such sound samples have been collected. To give you an impression of the variety, we have selected ten different engine sounds. Listen for yourself, but perhaps use your headphones if you are sitting in an open-plan office:
And for those who want to search for other engine sounds, here is an introduction to the sound search .
