Electrifying old cars is not a good investment
You get the feeling that suppliers who convert classic cars into electric cars are springing up like mushrooms. But perhaps the boom is already over; after all, it's now pretty clear that you can't save the world by electrifying an old car, the opposite is more likely to be the case. In fact, the production of batteries, motor technology and control electronics is likely to require more energy and thus produce more CO2 than can ever be saved again later, especially as electrified vehicles do not cover hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
Of course, there may still be reasons to equip an old car with an electric motor and batteries, but you have to be able to afford these reasons.
One British man was obviously able to do this, he had his Mercedes-Benz 350 SL converted and invested not much less than £200,000.
On Saturday, November 11, 2023, this electric R107 was then auctioned off by Iconic Auctioneers in Birmingham. The result of the sale: £ 45,000 (converted: EUR 51,300 or CH 49,500).
In retrospect, it can be said that around £ 150,000 was lost. It was certainly not a good investment. However, it would be interesting to know why the owner sold the SL so quickly ...
