The visual rev limiter

Nowadays you can't really over-rev cars or their engines any more, the electronics make sure that you stay within the permitted rev ranges. This was often not the case in the past. Although there were mechanical rev limiters early on, many cars had to make do without them.
In order to warn the driver of excessive engine speeds, Fiat came up with an inexpensive solution for the 132. A sticker on the windshield (readable from the inside!) warned the driver of excessive speeds in the first three gears.
I wonder if this had the desired effect?
