Back then, when all was still right with the world ...

Time and again, you hear completely weird stories about replica cars that are suddenly supposed to become real success classics with an exciting racing history. Lost in a barn for 40 years, suddenly back, perfectly restored with a fascinating history. The "Kienle" company has probably now set the ball rolling again. Many owners are now once again in the dark as to what kind of car is really in their garage.
Yes, of course, things only become really interesting when the vehicle value reaches astronomical heights.
An Arna from Alfa Romeo will certainly never be rebuilt, so you're happy if one is restored or at least just kept alive.
My father dreamed all his life of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL with gullwing doors, at a time when prices were still reasonably realistic and you could have been sure of getting a truly original vehicle, albeit with more or less signs of wear. For better or worse, you would have had to get rid of them, which certainly wouldn't have been cheap even back then and always put my father off buying one. But our family archive still contains a handful of letters and sales advertisements from the sixties and seventies, which were for gullwing cars of this type, when prices were still between CHF 17,500 and 45,000.
I will come back to this in the story about my recently deceased father in the Zwischengas annual magazine 2024, which will be published in mid-December 2023, and report a little more about it.
