What used to be art is now marketing
No, this photo is not from today but from 1967, when five artists added a personal touch to cars from various manufacturers. The cars were exhibited at the Paris Motor Show and then auctioned off to benefit a foundation for French medical research.
The Renault 4 was decorated by Arman (Armand Pierre Fernandez, 1928-2005, co-founder of "Nouveau Réalisme") with many small silhouettes of the same car. The decals were applied somewhat roughly, as can be seen at the front end.
Today, something similar is called "foiling" and is usually done for marketing reasons...
P.S. The photo can also be found in high resolution and with the original detail in the Zwischengas archive .
