How much more is the original color worth?
Less than a handful of Ferrari 512 BBs were painted in the special "Verde Germoglio" color, while there were around 69 Dino 246 GTs in this shade of green. The owner of a red Ferrari 512 BB from 1980 decided to repaint his mid-engined sports car in precisely this shade of green. And now this BB is going under the hammer for EUR 200,000 to 300,000 at the Artcurial Parisienne auction on February 5, 2021 .
From an investor's point of view, the question naturally arises as to whether it would be more valuable in the color red, or whether this BB would have been valued significantly higher if it had left the work in "Verde Germoglio" back in 1980.
There will be another possible date just a few days after the Artcurial auction in Paris, when RM/Sotheby's will be auctioning a gold-colored ("Oro Chiaro") Ferrari 365 GT4/BB from 1974 in Paris .
Only three early Berlinetta Boxers were painted in this color and the early BB with the smaller engine is also significantly rarer than the later 512 BB. At the same time, "Oro Chiaro" was probably less popular than "Verde Germoglio".
So now we can guess what RM/Sotheby's estimate will be for their BB. It has not yet been communicated, so the suspense will remain for a short while yet. As soon as the lot list has been finalized, we will of course also announce the RM Paris auction in detail. And of course we will also communicate the results.
