Folding key already in the fifties
08/21/2020
Do you remember the first folding keys, such as those introduced by Mercedes-Benz or Audi, when cars could also be opened remotely, but you didn't want to do without the classic key because it also served as an ignition key or as an emergency solution when unlocking the car if the remote control didn't work? That was in the nineties, wasn't it?
Well, Opel already had folding keys in the fifties, but probably more for the reason that they wanted to protect their pants, which would otherwise be cut by the sharp-edged key bit. However, the Opel solution, which could be used by drivers of a 1953 Olympia Rekord, for example, was much more compact because the cover did not have to contain a radio device.
We were shown this practical device at the Zurich Classic Car Awardthe day before yesterday . We have of course already published a report on this beauty contest.
