On average, people buy their first classic car at the age of 38 (question of the week)
There is a lot of talk about the next generation of classic car owners and that today's young people may never be interested in old cars. But in fact, very few of us bought our first old car when we were young, or did we? To understand this a little better, we launched a question of the week.
Obviously we were wrong, in fact 34.8 percent of classic car owners bought their first old car between the ages of 18 and 29.
21.8 percent bought their first classic car between the ages of 30 and 39.
14.0 percent were 40 to 49 years old and 16.2 percent were 50 to 59 years old when they bought their first car, which was at least 20 years old at the time.
Only 6.7 percent were over 60 years old when they bought a youngtimer or classic car.
6.5 percent of the 371 respondents did not fall into any of the given options, presumably because they had never bought a car that was over 20 years old when they bought it. This does not mean that these cars are not youngtimers or classic cars today.
If you work with the responses received, the average age of the first classic/youngtimer purchased is around 38 years. This is significantly lower than many would have predicted. And it is particularly surprising when you know, for example, that current Zwischengas readers are now more likely to be 60 than 40 years old.
Nevertheless, these figures are also somewhat reassuring. After all, if the average first-time buyer of a classic/youngtimer is 38 years old, then at least another ten years will pass before the car fatigue of the "Zoomers" or "Generation Z" (born around the turn of the millennium) will have an impact on the classic car market.
Here is the analysis in graphic form:
Of course, we have already posted the next "Question of the Week " online. This time we are trying to find out how likely cars built around the turn of the millennium are to survive.
And, of course, you can still read all the evaluations of previous "Questions of the Week " in the specially created topic channel.
