The tricks of experienced car owners
09/10/2019
There are breakdowns that don't have to be breakdowns. When I turned the ignition key of a Mini Cooper S recently, it didn't really want to start its starter motor. It sounded as if the battery was at the end. A colleague gave me the tip to start the car in neutral without using the clutch. Lo and behold, the engine started immediately, no sign of battery weakness.
Over 20 years ago, I owned a BMW 530i V8 Touring (E34). When I parked it on a sidewalk (with the right wheels higher than the left), the BMW would no longer start. The solution here? Push the car forward until it was flat again and it started.
And so there are probably many little quirks that experienced owners have no problem dealing with. Novices, however, hardly stand a chance and have to rely on ADAC, TCS and the like.
If your car has one of these quirks, why not comment on this blog? It would be interesting if some of these problems (and their solutions) came together here and perhaps saved one or two readers from a breakdown ...
