Honest exhaust pipes
09/03/2019
Modern cars integrate the exhaust system into the overall design. Depending on the model variant, one, two or even four exhaust tips are shown, artfully integrated into the rear. Whether the exhaust gases leave the engine through one or more pipes can no longer be guessed from the rear. And the more powerful and valuable the car, the more elaborate and impressive the design at the rear.
In the past, the exhaust system was given much less thought; its main purpose was to serve the specifications and reduce the noise to the required level and direct the exhaust gases away from the car in such a way that there was little loss of power and the engine ran well. The sound was not created more or less automatically in the sound lab.
The recently ported Sunbeam 1500 GT is a good example of this, a simple steel pipe ending under the bumper, not even protected against rust.
Today, a comparable "GT" version would certainly have several tailpipes in a square or polygonal shape at the rear.
