Nowadays, almost every car has a rev counter, so hardly any vehicle manufacturer has the idea of entering the ideal or latest shift times on the speedometer.
In the past, however, this was still common practice, and "in the past" was not so long ago. The picture above shows the speedometer of a Toyota Corona Liftback from 1980. Despite the five-speed gearbox and extensive equipment, the rev counter was missing.
The speedometer then only showed the maximum speeds of the first three gears, probably because fifth was designed as a low gear or was not installed in all models.
Of course, the marked shift points did not completely replace the rev counter, but the drivers of the past had learned to drive by ear, which was easier with the clearly audible engines than it is today ...
