Screwdrivers are not yet extinct, on the contrary! (Question of the week)
Thirty years ago and more, most classic car owners also saw themselves as mechanics who repaired minor or major problems on their cars themselves and sometimes even took on a restoration. With the growth and broadening of classic car ownership, but also with the advent of increasingly complex technology, more and more classic car and youngtimer owners are having their cars serviced, repaired or restored by a specialist. The classic "mechanic" seems to be dying out. But this appears to be "fake news", as the analysis of the results of the last "Question of the Week" reveals a completely different picture.
When asked whether they still do their own screwdriving, 60.8% of the more than 450 participants in the survey answered "Yes, of course". They all still use their own tools and carry out minor and major repairs themselves.
A further 31.9 percent do at least minor things and breakdowns themselves, leaving at most complicated and plannable things to a specialist.
Only 6.6 percent stated that they do not carry out any work on their old car themselves apart from visual inspections. Only 3 participants were unable to agree with any of the answers given.
So there is still a lot of tinkering going on in the classic and vintage car scene, much more than some people would like to admit. That's a good thing!
