Summary
In April 1951, BMW presented the new Type 501, a magnificent limousine for up to six people in a rounded shape. The car is known today as the 'Baroque Angel' because of its shape, but the shape certainly had aerodynamic advantages and the car offered plenty of space and comfort. The engine came from the pre-war predecessor BMW 326, but the rest of the technology was largely new. This vehicle report portrays an early BMW 501 that has just awoken from its slumber in all its details and tells the story of the great post-war BMW, supplemented by several sales brochures, historical illustrations and a handbook.

It's the kind of story that many a classic car enthusiast dreams of. A proud owner of a BMW 502 was stopped by an elderly man on a drive one day. He had another car like it in his garage, said the stranger. It had been there for thirty years and he would be happy if the car went away, he continued. Well, his interest was piqued. The vehicle was inspected and identified as an early BMW 501 with a six-cylinder engine. Although some parts were barely recognizable under the years of road grime and dust, a purchase price was agreed and the car changed hands. Now it had to be cleaned and polished for the first time and not much was expected of the engine. But as if by a miracle, the engine came back to life after careful attempts to revive it and a few small parts were replaced, and it purred away as it had done back then.
