When car enthusiasts still knew Latin
06/09/2017
Even we, who deal with old automobile magazines on an almost daily basis, were taken aback. In issue 3/1960 , Automobil Revue informed its readers about the new V8 engine from Rolls-Royce. The article was entitled "Per aspera ad astra". Loosely translated, this means "Over rough roads one reaches the stars". What was meant was that Rolls-Royce spared no effort to develop a great engine.
After all, this V8 of the "L-Series" was manufactured for almost 50 years, most recently for Bentley models from 2009, which were produced by the VW Group.
However, just how many Rolls-Royce and Bentley drivers really understand Latin is not revealed, nor is the horsepower of the engines, which have been declared "sufficient" for decades.
We will soon be publishing a comprehensive report on a magnificent car that had this engine in the front.
