The Volvo Amazon convertible that came in from the cold
06/18/2017
It was winter when Belgian coachbuilder Jacques Coune photographed his latest creation, a convertible based on the Volvo 122 S. A short time later, he showed the beautiful result at the Brussels Motor Show. The Automobil Revuecommented at the time:
"Jacques Coune shows a convertible Volvo that he developed at the behest of the Belgian importer from the two-door 122 S sedan by removing the roof, reinforcing the substructure and the refined windshield mullions and increasing the opening angle of the doors. Lower doors (62 instead of 73 cm) and differently installed rear lights cannot detract from the memory of the typical Volvo line. The well-made car was to be built in a small series of 5 to 6 units per month and could also arouse interest in Switzerland."
Unfortunately, nothing came of the small series, but this was not due to the successful design, but to the fact that many of Coune's coachbuilders moved back to their home country of Italy when the economy improved and he had too few trained specialists under contract, so to speak. As a result, Coune is said to have produced only four original convertibles in total, two of which presumably survived.
The pictures are of course also available in high resolution in the Zwischengas photo archive.
