Ford relegates Ferrari, Lotus and Porsche to second place
A few days ago, the motorsport magazine Powerslide was added to the Zwischengas magazine archive, around 6000 pages from the years 1963 to 1975, which we reported on . Of course you can browse through them number by number, but you can also search through them , for example by car brand. We did this on a trial basis to find out which brands are particularly common. Porsche, for example, can be found 1428 times, Lotus even 1572 times. Ferrari came up with 1578 hits, but the winner was Ford.
However, the Ford brand also benefited from the fact that it was frequently mentioned in connection with Lotus, and this effect probably boosted both.
But Porsche? After all, it was the up-and-coming sports car brand in those years, decorated with Le Mans victories and triumphant at the Monte Carlo Rally. Why couldn't Porsche beat Ford?
But there were other surprises too: Brabham, for example, scored 1358 hits, while Alfa Romeo only managed 983, closely followed by McLaren (952), BMW (869) and Lola (703).
If you go down a level, you will find "Mini" 420 times and "Cortina" 325 times.
And what about tire companies? There's Firestone with 408 hits, Goodyear with 371 and Dunlop with 264. The double-page ad with the Ferrari prototype was really something!
Technology companies such as Bosch (94) and Sachs (49) fared less well.
On the other hand, the Nürburgring is mentioned 610 times and Le Mans 454 times.
And which people generated the most coverage? First place in our little survey went to Jackie Stewart (616 hits), followed by Emerson Fittipaldi (508), Niki Lauda (231), Rolf Stommelen (197), Hans-Joachim Stuck (187) and Jochen Mass (161).
It's actually still interesting what you can find out in a digital archive ...
