When you start driving today, you hardly notice the starter. It only needs to be engaged briefly and the engine is already running; with the automatic start-stop system, it even does this automatically. At most, there is a brief whirring sound.
It used to be different. The starter motors still had to work properly, sometimes even longer, until the engine started. Connoisseurs could even distinguish the different cars by their starter noises.
