Classic pearls of the future - Tomorrow EV3
02/13/2017
It is highly likely that traffic and cars will become increasingly electric. The traditional manufacturer Morgan has apparently also recognized this and, with the EV3, has developed a fun vehicle of its own kind that drives purely electrically.
It was to be expected that the EV3 would not adhere to any standard conventions. It weighs just 500 kg and has only three wheels. It can't be used for much more than carrying two passengers and is probably best driven alone if you really let it fly.
Not that it is a powerful tricycle, 46 kW (or as it used to be called 62.5 hp) is not a monster performance. But when the conceptually huge torque is unleashed on the petite driven rear wheel, wheelspin and fun are guaranteed.
The 20 kWh lithium battery provides a range of over 200 km, ensuring that economical thinking does not fall by the wayside. That's twice the battery capacity of a VW Passat GTE (hybrid), but four times the electric range.
Even in terms of price, the Morgan EV3 is not completely out of the ordinary; it should cost around the same as its petrol-powered three-wheeler equivalent. It should also be available to buy, and the start of production has been announced for the fourth quarter of 2016.
However, it is still questionable whether the EV3 can be registered in this country in the form presented, because without mudguards but with a centrally mounted high beam, it could be a little scary for some test experts.
On the other hand, we think it's reasonably likely that in forty years' time, the boys will be into an EV3 classic car. They will also have got used to the lack of engine sound by then.
