How far can you get with a five-liter petrol can?
04/21/2016
If you stop on the road without gas, you usually make your way to a petrol station, get a can of gas and fill it with fuel. This is usually five liters. Careful drivers may also have a full canister in their car, or they may find a helpful road user who can help them out with a few liters of fuel.
So now there are five liters in the tank again, but how far can you get with that?
The simple-minded person would assume that this should be enough for 50 km (with a consumption of 10 liters per 100 km). However, if you want to move a twelve-cylinder or a thirsty eight-cylinder and the circumstances are not particularly favorable, the 50 km can also become 10 or 15 km. And then you're stranded again if you don't immediately head for the nearest filling station.
Here you can see how far technology has come. A modern VW Passat GTE, for example, can cover almost 200 km if the hybrid drive battery is fully charged beforehand. This is impressive progress when you consider that the modern car weighs around 1.8 tons (with driver).
But you shouldn't apply such figures to old cars, otherwise you'll be on the road more often than you'd like.
