When the Car of the Year award still featured special vehicles
So now it's happening again, the Car of the Year awards. A jury of automotive journalists from various countries will choose between the
- Audi A4
- BMW 7 Series
- Jaguar XE
- Mazda MX5
- Opel / Vauxhall Astra
- Skoda Superb
- Volvo XC90
must or may decide. The pre-selection doesn't knock your socks off. And whether the Skoda Superb or the Jaguar XE comes out on top won't turn the world upside down either.
We'd rather remember years when really special vehicles made it to the top, such as in 1966 when the Renault 16 was voted Car of the Year. Or in 1978, when the Porsche 928, a sports car, was voted Car of the Year. And the judges were really brave when they chose the NSU Ro 80 with Wankel engine as the winner in 1968.
We took a look back and compiled the Cars of the Year of the past decadesand there are a few vehicles among them that are now considered classics, while the majority are simply forgotten. Or do you remember that the Austin 1800 (pictured above) was voted Car of the Year at the second edition in 1965? Or that the Simca-Chrysler Horizon took first place in 1979?
After all, the Jensen FF, Ford Mustang, Mercedes-Benz 350 SL and Citroën SM all came in at least third place ...
